Kinja'd!!!

I was in the shop until after 11:00 last night putting lug nuts on, taking them off, putting them on, taking them off, putting them on, taking them off...

The reason being, Ford in their 1963 peak of genius put my hubs together with studs in such a way as to rivet the hubs and brake drums together, and not having a big enough brain to figure out how to unstake the studs properly, I possibly bent the hub as much as .008" or so.

This would not matter except that that much runout makes a brake drum run out of alignment enough to bind on the brake shoes, and between that, the resistance to drawing up straight onto the old studs (with a slight “bulge” left from the staking), and the fact that the whole drum would distort if drawn up crooked meant that I had to take the drum off, and on, and off, and on, each time measuring with a caliper how far out of square it was - and each time I also had to take the hub off the axle.

I finally got it to “almost” with exhaust gasket shims under two of the studs. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Maybe. By which I mean after I backed the adjuster off two steps, and when I tightened the wheel up, there was no brake drag - which means the runout may at worst now be small enough that if it drags again I can have the hub and drum (now mated) turned at the auto parts store. Maybe.

What kind of job for schmucks has things drag, then not drag, then drag, then not drag based on how tight you get things?

That’s what you get for living in the antipodes.

Ah, fuck. The fucking alloy rim on my Cannondale that still isn’t right.

Kinja'd!!!

But seriously, though. A car part acting like a bike part? What even is this?
